Photograph showing a Nazi parade on Pariser Platz in the shade of the Brandenburg Gate after the so called “power grasp” 1933. Unknown photographer.
On 30th January 1933 Adolf Hitler was orderly declared chancelor of the Weimar Republic. Within six months after having been voted into government, Hitler and the Nazis abolished the first democratic German state, and then gradually established their reign of terror with the help of elites and parts of the German people. Everything that happened from then on, all the atrocious crimes were legal, and commissioned or encouraged by the government. This was possible because the largest part of the populace remained listless in the face of the obvious tyranny.

Water pipes passing the Landwehrkanal in Kreuzberg. The canal, originally constructed in the late 17th century as a drainage canal to drain the swampland around Berlin, was later used as a raft canal to transport wood. As Berlin started growing rapidly in the 19th century the canal was conceived and expanded into its current form by landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné. Photography by wiki-user Roehrsnsee dated fall 1990.

Rebuilding Berlin. Karl Marx Allee 1952

The German Federal Archive tag suggests September 17, 1953 as the date of this photography taken by a Mister Krueger. The Karl-Marx-Allee (then still called Stalinallee, as indicated in the street sign) in Friedrichshain was rebuilt to be the representative street of the East-German capital with apartments for party officials. Exactly three months earlier soviet troops and East-German police struck down an uprise of thousands of workers that rebuilt this very street, over higher work quotas imposed by East-German officials, leaving more than 500 dead. June 17 henceforth was the national holiday of West-Germany until reunification on October 3, 1990.
